What are the different activity modes and how do I use them?

Volt offers three types of workout modes: Set Mode, Circuit Mode, and Freestyle Mode. Each mode is designed to support different training styles and goals. Understanding how these modes work can help you get the most out of programming specific activities.

Set Mode Workouts

Set Mode is Volt’s classic training experience and the one most athletes are familiar with. It’s a step-by-step workout format where you move through one set at a time, at your own pace.

Best for:

  • Strength and power training
  • Traditional lifting workouts

Key Features:

  • Prescribed loading, reps, timed intervals, and rest periods
  • Step-by-step structure with athlete input after each set
  • Optimized for Smart Sets™, a feature of Volt’s patented AI system, Cortex®

When Smart Sets™ is enabled in your program, Volt will prompt you to rate your Rate of Perceived Exertion (RPE) after each loaded movement. Volt’s AI then adjusts your future weights automatically to help you optimize results over time.

Circuit Mode Workouts

Circuit Mode is a timed interval training experience. Instead of moving at your own pace, you’re guided by a timer that automatically advances to the next movement when each interval ends.

Best for:

  • Interval or conditioning workouts
  • Minimal phone interaction during training

Key Features:

  • Runs entirely on a timer
  • Automatic progression between movements
  • Audio announcements for a hands-free experience

When audio is enabled, you’ll hear cues for movement names, interval lengths, and countdowns.

Freestyle Mode Workout

Freestyle Mode gives coaches the flexibility to create outside of Volt’s structured workout builder. This is especially helpful if you want to create an activity where you can input a PDF, a specific Youtube video, or any other media you want to use to program.

Best for:

  • Custom or unstructured training type
  • Drill type workouts using diagrams from PDFs
  • Sharing external resources with athletes

Key Features:

  • Coaches can attach images, videos, or PDF files directly to the activity
  • Athletes can mark the activity as done once completed
  • Coaches can set an estimated duration and include written instructions or external links (such as YouTube videos or websites)

Freestyle Mode helps bridge the gap between structured Volt workouts and the broader training experience, keeping everything in one place.
