How do I create a new Smart Program?
Smart Programs™ are the latest evolution of training on Volt — offering more flexibility, customization, and effectiveness to meet the needs of every athlete.
What Are Smart Programs?
Smart Programs are a reimagined version of Volt’s training programs, built to adjust around your goals, time, and training preferences — while still being rooted in proven, sport-specific methodology. With more dynamic features than Classic Programs, they give you the ability to program smarter, not harder. Designed by our Head of Performance Training, Jace Derwin, CSCS, RSCC, TSAC-F, Smart Programs bring a new level of intelligence and adaptability to your training experience.
Key Features
Integrated Warm-Ups and PrimersEvery training day begins with a built-in Warm-Up or Primer designed to help athletes move better and prepare for the session ahead.
Adjustable Duration and FrequencyYou control how long and how often your athletes train. Whether you have 30 minutes or a full hour, the program adapts to your schedule.
Program StackingCombine multiple Smart Programs to support different goals — such as strength, conditioning, or movement quality — all within a unified training plan.
Flexible Program LengthWith Smart Programs, you can create programs that last anywhere from 1 to 100 weeks — by stacking multiple program phases together.
How Do I Create a Smart Program?
To create a Smart Program in the Volt Coach Platform:
1. Go to the Programs page and click Create Program
2. Choose Smart Program
3. Choose your training domain
4. Select your Smart Program (ex. All-Around Athlete)
5. You’ll then see the Customize page, where you can configure your program to your preferences. Some program options are only available in specific configurations (for example, an In-Season program option may not be available in a 4-Day configuration). We’re adding new program dimensions all the time, but email us at feedback@voltathletics.com if you have a request.
6. Create the calendar for your program on the Build page. Just like with Classic Programs, you can select your calendar type (Auto-Advance or Self-Paced) and choose your start date. Then, use the plus and minus buttons to configure the length of your program.
If you want your program to have multiple phases (like an off-season and an in-season), click Add Another Phase. This will guide you through the flow again to configure your next phase of training. (You can create multiple phases, up to 100 weeks of training!)
7. When your program looks good, click Build My Program — then use the Training Editor to make any customizations.
Smart Program FAQs
What About Classic Programs?
Classic Programs are still available if you prefer the original format. However, Smart Programs™ are designed to provide a more seamless and adaptable training experience — and may eventually replace Classic Programs entirely. We'll be sure to communicate any changes well in advance.
How is it different from a Classic Program?
Classic Programs are Volt’s original training programs, also designed by expert coaches. A Classic Program contains 52 weeks of training and one workout per training day. When building a Classic Program, you configure your sport season calendar and generate a year of training. But that training does not contain Warm-Ups or Primers, workout duration options, or the ability to blend two different programs together.
Smart Programs let you construct a training program from 1 to 100 weeks, comprised of multiple smaller programs, in a single flow. They also give you more control over program options, like duration.
What if I do not see my sport under Smart Programs?
We’ve built Smart Programs for our most popular sports for launch, and are working hard to complete our sport list soon. If you don’t see your sport, email us at feedback@voltathletics.com to let us know — and check back soon! We’ll be adding new Smart Programs every cycle.
Is my current Volt program going away?
No! We are not deleting your current Volt program, and you can still create Classic Programs until we sunset our old program generator technology in the future. We’ll give you plenty of notice before that happens.
